DI Rick Hart is the SIO in charge of the investigation of a violent pimp, Jack James.
James assaults a young prostitute called Cally Blythe.

Rick places Cally in a refuge and sends PC Diane Rivers to get the girl's statement. When Rivers arrives, James has the girl in his clutches.

During the arrest, Diane overpowers him, causing him to fixate on the idea of becoming Britain's first police serial killer with Diane as his target.
As Rick delves deeper into the case, it appears as though Cally is attempting to supply children to a paedophile ring involving people in the public eye.

A high-ranking official puts pressure on the team to drop the case.
A breakthrough in the case causes Diane's sanity to unravel, and when she disappears, the suspect is not the kidnapper.
